Hartland water hardness: very hard, about 23 grains per gallon

The Village of Hartland answers the hardness question itself, in its annual report: the water it supplies is very hard, about 23 grains per gallon. Here is the water behind that figure, how it rates, who it leaves out, and how a quote uses it.

Shallow wells behind the figure

The Village water utility draws from five drilled wells, every one finished in a shallow aquifer of sand and gravel, 81 to 135 feet down, rather than in the deep sandstone.

Hardness is the dissolved calcium and magnesium that groundwater carries, and the Village's report puts a plain number on it.

The line in the Consumer Confidence Report

The Village's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report, for public water system 26802050, says the drinking water supplied in the Village is very hard, approximately 23 grains per gallon.

That is the figure for water as the Village delivers it. The rest of the report, from the wells to what is added at them, is covered in the guide to reading it.

Where 23 grains falls on the USGS scale

The USGS groups water into four bands by milligrams per liter: soft up to 60, moderately hard from 61, hard from 121, and very hard above 180. Divided by 17.1, that very-hard threshold is 10.5 grains.

Hartland's 23 grains is more than double it, so the Village's words very hard match the USGS's own highest category rather than overstating anything.

Homes outside the Village system

The figure covers water the Village supplies. A house in the Town of Merton, or anywhere around Hartland, that pumps its own well sits outside that system, and its hardness is unknown until tested.

If a lab reports that well's hardness in milligrams per liter, dividing by 17.1 puts it in grains, side by side with the Village's 23.

Using the figure on a Hartland quote

A Village home needs no homework before the call: the 23 grains is already known to us, and the household and the layout of the house do the rest.

Shallow groundwater can shift with conditions at the surface, so a newer report outranks an older one, and the plumber's reading at your tap on install day outranks both. The softener takes its setting from that reading, and the retest afterward has to show zero.

Common questions

Does the Village give its hardness in grains or milligrams?

In grains. Its report states about 23 grains per gallon, the unit softener settings use, so a Village household has nothing to convert.

Why would shallow wells matter for the hardness figure?

Water that close to the surface responds sooner to what happens above it. That is a reason to use the newest report you can find, and to trust a reading at your own tap over any older figure.
