Reading Hartland's Consumer Confidence Report for the hardness

The Consumer Confidence Report is the Village of Hartland's annual report on its drinking water. For anyone setting or buying a softener, one sentence in it does most of the work, and a few details around it decide how much weight that sentence deserves.

Which report, and where it lives

The Village of Hartland water utility publishes it for public water system 26802050. The 2024 edition is posted in the document center on the Village's website.

It speaks for water the Village delivers. A Town of Merton house on its own well is outside that system, and the report has nothing to say about its water.

The sentence that matters

The report says the drinking water supplied in the Village is very hard and puts it at approximately 23 grains per gallon. There is no table to decode and no milligrams to convert: the unit is the one a softener's control head uses.

By the USGS's reckoning, very hard starts at 10.5 grains, so the Village's figure is more than twice the start of that band.

Why the edition year matters here

The wells behind the report are shallow, finished in sand and gravel between 81 and 135 feet down, and groundwater that shallow responds sooner to what happens at the surface.

So use the newest edition you can find. If a report later than 2024 gives a different figure, the later one is the better guide, and the plumber's reading at your tap on install day is better still.

Lines that are not about hardness

The report also lists what the Village adds at its wells: a phosphate solution at each well station, to coat the inside of pipes, and chlorine at four of the five. Those are the Village's own treatment steps, and the 23 grains describes the water as supplied after them.

None of it changes what a softener is set for, which is hardness and nothing else. The guide on the water's path from the wells to your main line goes through those steps.

Carrying the figure to the call

If the Village supplies the house, nothing: confirm the supply and the figure is already known. If the house is on a well, the Village report is not yours to read from. Your well's lab report takes its place, and its hardness and iron lines are the ones to read out.

Common questions

Do I need the report in hand to get a price?

No. For a Village home the figure is already known on our side, and your tap is read on install day before anything is set.

What if I cannot find the 2024 edition?

Any recent edition from the Village works as a starting point. The figure that sets your softener comes from your own tap on install day.
