Hartland's water, from five shallow wells to your main line

Before Hartland's water reaches a softener in your house, it has come up out of shallow sand and gravel and passed through a Village well station. Here is that path, step by step, from the Village's own report, and where a softener fits at the end of it.

Up from 81 to 135 feet

The Village pumps five drilled wells, every one finished in the shallow sand-and-gravel aquifer rather than the deep sandstone, at depths between 81 and 135 feet.

Water that close to the surface responds sooner to what happens above it. That is the practical reason to treat any hardness figure for Hartland as a snapshot, and to read the newest one.

Phosphate at every well station

According to the Village's 2024 Consumer Confidence Report, a phosphate solution is added at each well station. The report gives its purpose as coating the interiors of pipes.

It is a step the Village takes at the source, and the report's hardness figure is for the water the Village supplies.

Chlorine at four of the five

The same report says chlorine is added at four of the five wells. Like the phosphate, it is part of how the Village delivers its water, not something a homeowner sets or adjusts.

What arrives at the main line

After all of that, the water reaching a Village house is, in the report's own words, very hard: approximately 23 grains per gallon.

That is where a softener in a Hartland house comes in. Set by the main line, it swaps the water's calcium and magnesium for sodium, or potassium where the brine tank is filled with potassium chloride, and it is judged by one thing: zero hardness at your tap once install day is done.

None of this applies to a Merton well

A Town of Merton house on its own well skips every step above. There is no well station, no Village report and no published figure; the water comes straight from that well, and its hardness is whatever a test shows.

Bacteria and nitrate lie outside what a softener is for, so the Wisconsin DNR's advice for private wells, a bacteria test every year at minimum, stays with the owner.

Common questions

Is the Village's 23 grain figure the water at my tap?

It is the Village's figure for the water it supplies, and it is where the conversation starts. The plumber still reads the hardness at your tap before the softener is set.

Does any of the Village's treatment reach a well house in Merton?

No. A private well is outside the Village system, so none of the Village's steps, and none of its figures, apply to it.
