Moving to Hartland or the Town of Merton: the water checks to make

A new house in Hartland or the Town of Merton runs on groundwater either way: the Village's shallow wells or a well on the lot. Which one, and what the softener in the house has been told about it, are the checks worth making first.

Village water or a well on the lot

If the Village of Hartland's utility bills the house for water, the house is on Village water. No water bill points to a private well, and in the Town of Merton that is worth asking about even when the address says Hartland.

The Village has 10,739 residents and the Town of Merton 8,306 by the state's 2026 estimates, and a Hartland mailing address can belong to either.

The Village's number, in its own words

If the house is on Village water, the Village's annual report has already done the measuring: very hard, about 23 grains per gallon in the 2024 edition. Keep that number; it is what the softener should be set close to, and what any replacement starts from.

What the softener in the house has been told

Look at the hardness setting on the softener's control head. On Village water, compare it with 23; on a well, with the hardness on the well's latest lab report.

A number well away from both may be a factory preset or a leftover from an older reading. The Village's wells are only 81 to 135 feet deep, and shallow groundwater can shift, so an old figure is a weak guide.

Well paperwork, if there is a well

For a Town of Merton house with its own well, ask the seller for every lab report. The hardness line sizes a softener, and any iron result belongs on the quote call too.

For a private well in Merton, the Wisconsin DNR advises testing for bacteria every year or more often. A softener has no role with bacteria or nitrate, so that test runs on its own schedule.

One call when you are ready

Find the main line's entry point and check that a drain and an outlet sit close to it. Then a call from 7am to 5pm on a weekday is enough: a Village home's quote is quick, and a Merton well home adds its lab numbers. You hear one price, and nobody comes by to sell.

Common questions

Is Hartland's water treated before it reaches the house?

The Village's 2024 report lists a phosphate solution at each well station and chlorine at four of the five wells. It still describes the delivered water as very hard, about 23 grains per gallon.

Should we keep the softener the sellers left?

If it works and its setting sits near the water's hardness, keeping it is reasonable. Hard-water spots returning on glassware would say otherwise; the replacement page walks through a swap.
